The main direction of research in Department of Cell Cryophysiology is the study of the mechanisms of cold and osmotic shock in cells. The work sections include the study of cytoskeletal role in the mechanism for control of cold and osmotic cell sensitivity, the effect of chemical modifiers of membrane and cytoskeleton on cell behaviour when changing the temperature and medium osmolarity, a change in functions of ion transport systems under dehydration conditions.

The main research idea of the department consists in the possibility to model the processes, affecting cells under freezing, as well as under different regimens of low temperature preservation, at positive temperatures when a water phase crystallisation is absent. Taking into consideration this fact there are studied such phenomena as hypertonic cryohemolysis of human erythrocytes and different kinds of animals, hypertonic shock and posthypertonic lysis of cell. There are theoretically and experimentally substantiated the possibility of an increase in cell resistance to a temperature and osmotic stress using chemical modifying agents, among which the principal attention is paid to the amphiphil compounds of different nature.

There is a simultaneous study of a change in cold and osmotic cell sensitivity under the effect of agents, modifying a functional state of ion transport systems. In this direction the majority of experiments is devoted to studying the effect character of anion transport inhibitors on cell resistance to a change in the osmotic and temperature parameters of medium.


A considerable part of the investigations carried-out in our department is related to studying the effect on cell state of cytoskeletal modifiers, primarily SH- and alkylating agents. Recently the research, devoted to revealing the link between an osmotic and temperature cells sensitivity and their initial conditions, has been designated as one of the department's work directions.

These works development allows to substantiate in theoretical and experimental ways the principle of a targeted regulation of cell resistance to stress effects when using combined regimens, including a partial dehydration with a simultaneous temperature modification of cell state. There was put forward the thesis about the fact, that a change in a cell volume is the factor, controlling cell transitions into the states, differing on a structural lability and sensitivity to external factors. This combines the investigations, performed at the department with those, devoted to the role of volume changes in mechanisms, controlling a programmable cell death, proliferative cell response, necrotic transformation, hormone secretion etc.

Nowadays the range of investigations, performing at the department has been extended due to the study of a temperature and osmotic cell sensitivity of different kinds of organisms and those with different age. The future perspectives of the department work is related to a comparative study of molecular mechanisms of adaptation of microorganisms and mammalian cells to the changes in temperature and osmotic parameters of the medium.
