The major trend of the scientific activity in the department is set to be studying the reactions of central nervous and cardiovascular systems in response to cooling: various regimens of craniocerebral hypothermia, rhythmic cold effects, artificial and natural hypometabolic states (hypobiosis, hibernation, sleep), general cooling of an organism and extreme cryotherapy. A special attention is paid to investigating the dynamics of heart and brain structures' bioelectrical activity. There has been determined the important role in these processes of the change of blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability for thermoregulatory neuromediators and other biologically active substances. The level of BBB permeability was found to be related to structural and functional state of neuroglial endothelial complexes, which are able to change the peculiar for them fractal properties depending on the type, depth, multiplicity and duration of cold effect. There were elaborated the methods for increasing the BBB permeability for biologically active substances, the ways for increasing the cold resistance of a mammalian organism. The studies performed on a functional state of embryonic nerve tissue fragments (ENT) following hypothermic storage and transplantation showed a high percent of a transplant engraftment (> 90%) and recovery of lost functions. There are worked out the methods for storage and procurement of ENT fragments with certain properties. There are accomplished the studies of the state of proteinase-proteinase inhibitor system at various pathological states under the conditions of rhythmic cold effects in animals of different age groups. Rhythmic cooling was shown to normalize the arterial pressure at stimulated hypertension, recover proteolysis level in old animals. A combined application of cold effect and cord blood preparation was found to level the consequences of an induced hypertension in experiment.

At the department there were performed R&D investigations within the frames of the International Grant "Cryobank of embryonic nerve tissue" PECO Foundation (Spain), the Grant "Elaboration of the method for direct transport to CNS of bioactive substances derived from embryonic and fetal tissue, by establishing the automated controlling system of BBB permeability" of the Ministry on Science and Technology of Ukraine.

There was designed the unique cryochamber for extreme low temperature effect on a biological object.

The use of therapeutic possibilities of cryochamber does not exclude, but often requires the preliminary use of earlier elaborated at the Institute methods for therapeutic cranio-cerebral and rhythmic hypothermia. There have been elaborated the methods for direct transport of the series of bioactive substances by changing the function of BBB barrier combined with the use of experimental cryotherapy, rhythmic hypothermia and the preparations of embryofetoplacental complex.
