Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

The Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine (IPC&C) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was founded in 1972 on the basis of two laboratories of the Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and the Problem Research Laboratory of Low-Temperature Preservation of Bone Marrow and Blood. The IPC&C of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is currently the only institution in the world that comprehensively develops modern medical and biological cryotechnologies.

Physicists and biophysicists, chemists and biochemists, mathematicians and engineers work together with biologists and physicians. Starting its activity with 47 employees, the staff of the institute today accounts for 222 employees, including 22 doctors of sciences and 105 candidates of sciences (more about the institute history).

The institute conducts fundamental and applied research in the following areas:

  • Study of mechanisms of cryodamage, cryoprotection, natural resistance of biological objects to cold and their repair after its action.
  • Creation of effective methods of artificial cryoprotection of biological systems of different organization levels and on their basis development of technologies of cryopreservation of biological objects and technical means of their implementation.
  • Use of hypothermia, cryotherapy and cryopreserved biological objects in treatment of various diseases.
  • Cell and tissue transplantation.

The institute has wide contacts with research centers of Ukraine, CIS, USA, Great Britain, Germany, India, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Netherlands, Israel, Spain, France, Sweden, Armenia, which allows to carry out complex programs on cryobiology of reproductive cells, preservation of cells, tissues, organs, as well as to conduct mutual internships of employees.

The staff of the institute was awarded five State Prizes in the field of science and technology (1 - USSR, 3 - USSR, 1 - Ukraine), 12 employees of the NAS of Ukraine were awarded prizes, one employee has the title of "Honored Doctor of Ukraine", two employees received honorary title "Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine".
